Procedures that avoid ENT Surgery

Enlarged turbinates make it hard for air to pass through the nose. This has many causes such as allergies or a deviated septum. Turbinate cautery shrinks the size of the turbinates to help open the airway. Turbinate cautery decreases the size of the blood vessels and tissues in the turbinates. It also decreases postnasal drip and drainage and allows the sinuses to drain. This may avoid nose surgeries.

Small & medium sized perforations of the tympanic membrane don't always require a tympanoplasty. Sometimes a simple stenting procedure in the OPD can facilitate the growth of the tympanic membrane, thereby healing the perforation. This may avoid ear surgeries.

GERD has been associated increasingly with ENT signs and symptoms. But many patients with Laryngeal signs do not improve with acid suppression only. Therefore it is essential to do a video laryngoscopy to assess the effects of GERD & help treat it better. This may avoid OGD scopies.

Epley, Semont or Foster Maneuver when performed for BPPV gives better results than medications alone & reduces the requirement of medications.

This reduces the need for long term medications.

1. Better visualization of the anatomy.

2. No radiation exposure.

3. Can be done multiple times to track the progress of treatment.

4. Can easily differentiate between mucus, inflammation, bleeding & soft tissue structures

5. Endoscopy is a tool for diagnosis as well as treatment since it can be combined with suction / cautery. This may avoid sinus surgeries.
